What did you like most about interning at MEI?
During my time at MEI I loved the genuine warmth and support between all members of the staff, including interns. Interns developed a true camaraderie and whether we were meeting a head of state, eating lunch in the garden, or going out for happy hour, the group was abuzz with talk of the Middle East. The work environment was one not only of independence, freedom, and creativity, but also teamwork and collaboration; interns were challenged to think critically and take on serious responsibility. I was given the opportunity to attend countless speeches and discussions, and learned more in those three months than I thought possible. My time at MEI was one I will never forget, and I will always appreciate the experience and knowledge it provided me.
What are you doing now?
I will graduate from Dartmouth College in June 2010 with a major in Middle Eastern Studies and a minor in Arabic. After spending a summer at home in Newton, MA, I will travel to Amman, Jordan in September. There, with funding from a Reynolds Scholarship from Dartmouth College, I will continue my thesis research begun in the summer of 2009 in Damascus, Syria. I will be working for nine months with Iraqi refugee women in Amman, exploring the effects of war and displacement on their experiences and identities.
