China’s Relations with the Middle East:

A Bibliography, 1950-2012

In recent years, fueled by ever expanding economic and political ties, the relationship between China and the Middle East[1]—also known as West Asia by international organizations such as the UN and many Asia-based observers—has been explored in dozens of papers, a handful of books, several conferences and intermittent attention by leading think tanks and the media. As this bibliography demonstrates, the vast majority of recent scholarship is devoted to energy security or Sino-Iranian ties. An unfortunate byproduct of this singular focus is that many papers simply reference prior studies and add little in the way of original research or analysis. Indeed, informed analysis of China’s growing ties with the Middle East remains virgin territory despite the recent surge in published material.

The following bibliography covers all aspects of modern China-Middle East ties—politics, energy, trade, investment, and the rare discussion of cultural exchange. Materials are divided into two categories, contemporary (2001-present) and historical. 2001 was selected as the dividing year because of two key events that year: the September 11 terrorist attacks and China’s admission to the World Trade Organization (WTO), the latter of which led to the surge in cross-Asian ties that continues to this day. Some related topics are excluded from this collection due to the breadth of their literature or to the relative distance from the main focus of this bibliography: the modern relationship between China and the Middle East.

Out of a desire for accessibility and brevity, only English language materials are included in this bibliography. In excluding Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish and especially Chinese sources, this bibliography by no means dismisses the necessity of reading local commentators in their native tongues. In China in particular, the expansion of commercial and political ties with the Middle East, alongside the growing sophistication of Chinese universities and think tanks, has spurred a great deal of informed discussion of Sino-Middle Eastern affairs. The considerable influence Chinese academic experts at times wield on government policy is yet another reason why Chinese-language analysis would be of value to foreign researchers.

This bibliography was compiled in conjunction with preparing my Masters thesis on Chinese foreign direct investment (FDI) in the Middle East.

The bibliography contains material noted up to December 2012, with several exceptions for edited volumes scheduled for publication in the spring of 2013.
