The Middle East Institute (MEI) seeks a full-time Associate Editor for its peer-reviewed academic publication, The Middle East Journal (MEJ).

A key member of MEI’s Publications Department, the Associate Editor is the main point of contact for Journal subscribers and MEI members who receive MEJ. As such, the Associate Editor is responsible for maintaining the database of subscriber records, processing and mailing claims, and other duties related to circulation and marketing. They also serve as the gatekeeper of MEJ’s Submissions Desk, advising the MEJ Editor in selecting papers for peer review, finding suitable academic readers, and helping track the review process. The Associate Editor also assists with editing, proofreading, and recruiting and managing a team of interns. The Associate Editor will primarily report to the Editor of MEJ. This is an entry-level position ideal for college graduates looking for a stepping-stone to postgraduate studies and those interested in academic publishing.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the MEJ Circulations Desk email account, adjudicating claim requests and answering customer queries as necessary

  • Send shipment orders to MEJ fulfillment contractor and ensure deliveries

  • Manage the MEJ Submissions Desk email account, processing new papers, tracking manuscripts sent out for peer review, and keep records up to date

  • Work with the MEJ Editor to substantively edit and copy-edit articles, features, and book reviews in the Journal

  • Assist the MEJ Editor with finding reviewers for selected manuscripts

  • Train and manage interns in editing, providing the MEJ Editor with draft for editing

  • Coordinate book and e-book deliveries with MEJ Book Review Editor for book reviews and annotations

  • Work with MEJ Editor, Board of Advisory Editors, and other MEI departments to help improve the impact and reach of the Journal

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree with related professional experience.

  • Candidates must be creative problem-solvers with a broad interest in the Middle East, the ability to multitask, work with minimal supervision at times, and organize and manage others as needed. Strong writing ability, editing/proofreading experience, and attention to detail are essential. Familiarity with online content production and Word/Excel are strongly preferred; Arabic, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish, or other Middle Eastern language skills and knowledge of layout software (Adobe InDesign) would be a plus.

  • Candidates should be able to start as soon as possible. The position can be largely done remotely but being able to come into MEI’s DC office on occasion is preferred.
