Sabina Durrani

Dr. Sabina Durrani is a medical doctor with post graduate studies in public health, public administration and an MSc degree in Crises Risk Disaster Management. She has a wide range of work experience in public health and public administration. She has worked in Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority and is currently working at the National Health Emergency Preparedness Response Network. In addition, she has been teaching courses in disaster management and sustainable development, public policy and public health.

    This essay draws on recent examples of efforts to respond to natural disasters in order to shed light on some of the main reasons such efforts often fall short of their desired outcome. To address these shortcomings, the author advocates, above all, the adoption of a long-term, holistic approach to disasters that could mitigate the risks associated with “slow burn” crises.
