Mr. Wasty commenced his career at the Planning Commission of Pakistan, where he served as special assistant to the Minister for Finance, and Planning and Development. Subsequently he worked at the World Bank (Independent Evaluation, and Quality Assurance), and then served as one of the managing directors and acting CEO of G. William Miller Financial Integrity Services, LLC. Currently, he is the president of a Washington-based and SBA-certified consulting firm: Sharakpur, Ltd., which has also formed a consortium-affiliation with Middle East and North Africa Consultants Association. Mr. Wasty’s guest lecturer positions have included those at Cornell-in-Washington Program, the Johns Hopkins University SAIS, George Mason’s OLLI, and Princeton’s Woodrow Wilson School. He is a member of panel of evaluation experts of UNDP and FAO, and has published extensively on ascertaining development effectiveness of external assistance policies of the international financial institutions in a variety of countries and regions. His latest assignment was as Team Leader of a United Nations’ several-member multidisciplinary group to independently assess the impact of the UN agencies’ and other partners’ ongoing assistance to Iraq and its Kurdistan Region.

For the benefits of reconstruction to take hold in today’s Iraq, it is essential to avoid oversimplified arguments that merely “fixing” ethno-sectarian tensions will be sufficient to attain the goal of political stability. A broader approach, which recognizes the country’s current ethno-sectarian polarization as both a symptom and a cause of instability would be a far more appropriate means of addressing the deep-rooted problems faced by Iraqis since 2003.
