The Middle East Institute (MEI) was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the murder of the esteemed and admired Iraqi scholar Husham al-Hashimi outside his home in Baghdad on Monday, July 6. Husham’s work played a defining role in the world’s understanding of extremism and terrorism in Iraq — a project to which he dedicated his life.

MEI, particularly its Countering Terrorism and Extremism Program, was honored and fortunate to have collaborated with Husham on various research projects. Husham’s latest groundbreaking research and analysis on ISIS was due to be published by MEI in the coming weeks. His voice and insights will be greatly missed.

Although Husham knew that his work carried great risks, his determination to put Iraq first was unwavering. The drive that underpinned Husham's mission exemplifies the values that Iraq needs amid its internal struggle for a peaceful future.

The thoughts and sympathies of MEI’s staff and scholars are now with Husham’s family, particularly his wife and children.

يعرب معهد الشرق الأوسط عن صدمته وحزنه الشديدين لاغتيال الباحث العراقي هشام الهاشمي خارج منزله في بغداد يوم الاثنين 6 يوليو/تموز. لقد كرس هشام حياته لمكافحة التطرف، وساهم بشكل فعال في فهم العالم لما يجري في العراق.

لقد تشرف مركز مكافحة التطرف والإرهاب التابع لمعهد الشرق الأوسط بالتعاون مع هشام الهاشمي في عدد من المشاريع البحثية. وقد كان من المقرر نشر أحدث أبحاث هشام حول داعش من قبل معهد الشرق الأوسط في الأسابيع القليلة المقبلة.

ورغم أن هشام كان يعلم أن عمله يحمل مخاطر كبيرة، إلا أنه لم يتراجع وأصر دائما على وضع العراق أولا. هشام كان من المثقفين الذين يحملون هم بلادهم، ويمثل القيم النبيلة التي يحتاجها العراق في خضم نضاله الداخلي من أجل مستقبل أفضل.

تعرب أسرة معهد الشرق الأوسط عبر جميع باحثيها وكوادرها عن تعاطفها العميق مع عائلة هشام، وخاصة زوجته وأطفاله.

سنفتقد كثيرا روحه الجريئة وأفكاره العميقة.
