في 9 ديسمبر/كانون الأول، قال الجنرال الأمريكي المسؤول عن التحالف الدولي المناهض لتنظيم الدولة الإسلامية في العراق إن المهمة القتالية الأمريكية قد انتهت وأن القوات الأمريكية لن تقدم سوى المشورة والتدريب والمساعدة والاستخبارات لشركائها العراقيين. لن يغير التحول في الأدوار حجم القوة الأمريكية الصغيرة في العراق كثيرًا، لكن الجنرال فرانك ماكنزي، قائد القوات الأمريكية في الشرق الأوسط، قال في 9 ديسمبر/كانون الأول إن تواجد الناتو في مهمة المساعدة يجب أن يزيد.

Simmering frustration and a demand for change: Public service protests in the Kurdistan Region
Despite its reputation for relative political stability and economic prosperity compared with its neighbors, the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) frequently experiences protests, driven by popular anger over the government’s unreliable provision of public services, especially water, electricity, and roads. These protests point to simmering dissatisfaction with governance in the KRI across broad swathes of the population. Although uncoordinated and localized at present, these protests have the potential to develop into a potent political force if they become better organized.

Will Sistani be the Last Legend? The Challenge of Succession and the Future of the Marj’aiyyah
For Shi’a Muslims, the highest-ranking religious authorities are known as marj’as, who serve as a reference point for emulation for laypeople (marj’a al-taqlīd). The position of the marj’a, known as the marj’aiyyah, has the exclusive right to issue religious rulings (fatwas). Since the 2003 invasion of Iraq, Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Sistani in Najaf has become a focal point not only for Shi’a in Iraq, but for the entire region. Sistani is now 91 years old and the question of succession is a central one — one that concerns not only Shi’a Muslims, but the wider Middle East as well. This paper aims to shed light on the future of the religious authority in the Shi’a world based on the unavoidable change after Sistani.
