Bryan Coleman is an MA candidate in Public Policy Analysis at the University of California at San Diego. He is a 2017 graduate in International Relations and Japanese at Knox College. During the fall 2016 academic term, he was enrolled in American University’s Washington Semester Program where he studied US Foreign Policy. In 2014, he participated in a cultural immersion and language development program in Japan. He earned a black belt in karate.
This essay discusses Japan’s long-standing energy dependence on the Middle East and the complications arising from it, with a focus on relations with Iran. More specifically, it looks at the risks and potential rewards of the revival and strengthening of Japan’s economic relations with Iran in the wake of the nuclear deal.
