Roger Allen is Professor of Arabic & Comparative Literature, and Chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of The Arabic Novel (2nd ed., 1995), and Introduction to Arabic Literature (2000), and also the translator of many works of modern Arabic fiction, including five novels of Naguib Mahfouz.
