Ian A. Merritt is the Legislative Director and National Security Advisor for Representative Chuck Fleischmann (TN-03), Chairman of the House Energy & Water Development Appropriations Subcommittee. His focus is on the Chairman’s work on appropriations, defense, energy, and foreign affairs. Prior to this role, he served as an intelligence officer at the Department of Defense. His first stint on Capitol Hill started with a fellowship through the Nuclear Security Working Group for Representative Jeff Fortenberry (NE-01), followed by serving as his military legislative assistant. Before that, he was a senior research assistant at the Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institution, where he contributed to research on regional geopolitical competition, military assessments, and counterterrorism strategy. Mr. Merritt has a M.A. in Security Studies from Georgetown University and a B.A. in European History from the University of San Francisco. He is originally from Marin County in the San Francisco Bay Area.
