Wael Alalwani is a data scientist and researcher in financial crimes analytics originally from the city of Hama, Syria. He holds a Masters in Artificial Intelligence from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). He has published a number of projects that leverage graph technologies and social network analysis on publicly available data. Wael also publishes Arabic articles that study the role of technology in society and shed light on global movements that could inspire positive change in the Middle East. He specializes in Syrian affairs with a particular interest in political economy and insurgent networks dynamics.

This study assesses the effectiveness of the sanctions imposed on the regime of Bashar al-Assad by conducting a comprehensive review of their history, evaluating shortcomings in the current setup, and recommending ways to move forward.
