Hamad Alshamlan is a Research Assistant with the Middle East Institute’s Policy Center. Prior to joining MEI, he was a junior research fellow at GLAFPOL, where he focused on security and governance issues in Somalia. He also interned with the American Enterprise Institute’s Critical Threats Project, where he analyzed non-state actors in Iraq. His research interests center around the intersection between religion and politics, East-West relations, and the histories of the Arab and Islamic worlds, with a particular emphasis on the Gulf region. He holds an MA in Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University and a BA in Political Science from The George Washington University. He is fluent in Arabic.
