Introduction
The MEI Archive is located on the first floor of the Oman Library. As the visitor enters the library, the bookshelves holding the Archive are located to the left, beginning with the Middle East Journal and extending to the Travelogue & Travel Guides Collection. Books published by MEI are cataloged and shelved accordingly, many of which are located in the General Collection and may be checked out to patrons with library cards.
Description of Archive: In time for MEI's 75th anniversary, the librarian Vickie Jacobs discovered most of the contents of the MEI Archive in a back corner of the Rare Books room in December of 2020. Now, patrons will find in the Archive a wide range of published and unpublished materials: books; conference proceedings; published or otherwise disseminated Newsletters, Flyers, and Bulletins; Problem Papers; and unpublished MEI items such as documents relating to the Executive Committee and the Board of Governors dating back to MEI's founding. Some of the materials are cataloged, and in those cases links are provided here in the resource guide. Items that are uncataloged at the time of the creation of this Guide provide more detail about the contents than perhaps those that are cataloged. A subset of the cataloged materials have been digitized and are included in the Digitized Rare Books Collection. This guide aims to help researchers discover all materials pertinent to the history of MEI.
Some materials that belong in the MEI Archive have been cataloged over the decades with inconsistent metadata standards that is the natural result of the change in cataloging practices among other uncontrollable circumstances. The librarian has taken care to fix errors and standardize the metadata for items physically located in the MEI Archive however it is a very time-consuming process and there are limitations of what can be done at one time. The search for more MEI Archive materials shelved among the General Collection will continue as time and projects allow.
Organization of Archive Guide: The Contents section provides links to each section for easy and quick navigation. The resources are listed in chronological order, organized by publication type and format. The Archive is organized essentially in the order of the Archive Guide with some deviation due to shelf space restrictions; location information is noted in each section of the Guide, which begins with the outward-focused content that includes MEI publications such as the Middle East Journal and other periodicals, moving on to books, then panel and conference proceedings. The Guide then segues to internal, unpublished documents by first presenting Annual Reports, and moves on to internal documents including a foundation-era Ledger, Board of Governors Minutes, and Executive Committee documents, letters, and memoranda. Finally, highlighted in this guide, are MEI@75 activities and publications, which are predominantly digital.
Access and Usage Guidelines: MEI Archive materials generally speaking do not circulate, however visitors may view and scan or copy materials within the library, and email requests for scanned items may be made, as library policies permit. Some materials do exist in duplicate, and in those cases the duplicate items may be circulated to Library cardholders. Books published by MEI may also circulate but readers should check the holdings information for specific items.

MEI Publications
It is recommendable to search, by publisher, for Middle East Institute. There may be some cases where publication information is either not included or incorrectly recorded. So as an alternative, users may benefit from searching based on item location: MEI Publications & Archive Collection.
MEI has put out several different serial publications since its founding in 1946. These titles are featured below in order of publication start date.
The Middle East Journal (MEJ)
MEI's flagship publication, which appeared first in January 1947 [confirm]...
The Oman Library has all current issues dating back to the first issue. Bound volumes begin with Volume I in 1947 and continue through Volume ??. Subsequent issues are on the shelf and may be viewed in the library or online on several platforms, including Ingenta: vol.58 (2004) - present; access to this online version is included with an MEI membership. For more information and subscription details, please contact the Journal staff at mej@mei.edu.
Middle East Report
Middle East Report was a bi-weekly publication and the first issues of The Middle East Institute’s Newsletter are bound together in one volume.
Contents include:
Copy 1 has MEI Newsletter: volume I, number 4 (December 27, 1948) through volume I no. 9. (Vol. I, number 6 not included.) Volume II, number 1 through number 5. Volume III, number 1 through number 7. Volume IV, number 1 through 10. Volume V, number 1 through number 10 (July 22, 1953).
Middle East Report: volume VI, number 1 (September 3, 1953) through number 24. Volume VII, number 1 through number 24, number 22 bound between numbers 23 and 24. Volume VIII, number 1 through number 7--the last issue of MER (December 31, 1955).
Copy 2 has MEI Newsletter, volume IV, no.2 (November 1, 1951--two copies), numbers 4 and 6-10; volume V, numbers 1-10 (July 22, 1953).
Middle East Report, volume VI, numbers 1 through 24; volume VII, numbers 1-22 and 24; volume VIII, numbers 1-7 (December 31, 1955).
A note in the last issue of MER (December 31, 1955) states, "As of January 1956, the REPORT will be succeeded by a new, much larger publication, to be known as LANDS EAST, the Near East and Middle East Magazine. / LANDS EAST, which will appear at least 10 times in its first year, will be a two-color feature magazine…”
Lands East
Lands East: The Near and Middle East Magazine was the successor to Middle East Report and was published from 1956 through 1959.
...A word on the missing 4th volume.
Newsletters, Calendars, Bulletins, News&Views
Newsletters, Calendars, and Bulletins are all located on the xxx bookshelf...and are stored in black binders. In the year xxxx, Calendars began to be published as an integral part of the Newsletter/Bulletin (which???). In these cases, Calendars were only removed from the Newsletter/Bulletin(?) when a duplicate copy existed in order to preserve the document in its original format without causing damage. In cases where a Calendar exists in the Newsletter/Bulletin that could not be removed and stored with the other calendars, a reference note has been inserted in the binder in its place.
Newsletters 1947-19xx
Newsletters 19xx-xxxx
Newsletters 20??-2002???
Calendars 19xx-xxxx
Bulletins 19xx-xxxx
Newsletters continued by News & Views [think it was 2002 sometime....last newsletter says]
News & Views became the final replacement of the weekly newsletter, sent via Constant Contact email to subscribers' inboxes every Friday, starting on February 15, 2013. This method of delivery has the benefit of being clutter-free, environmentally friendly, and easy to subscribe or unsubscribe to. A downfall, however, is that archiving issues for posterity is made slightly more complicated than with the paper newsletters. Researchers interested in viewing back-issues of News & Views should contact the librarian.

Books
Some MEI publications are shelved among general collection--usually these include the circulating second copy, while the first, library use only copy, is shelved in the MEI Publications & Archive Collection.
Holdings information is provided in each catalog record. On the MEI website, readers will find a page displaying allRecent Publications; all recent titles are held by the library and may be used as laid out in the Library Policies.
All MEI publications that are held by the Oman Library are cataloged and may be found by searching for the publisher: Middle East Institute. However some books like the Conference Proceedings may not have been cataloged with a publisher, so the most reliable method to retrieve all MEI works would be to search for items held in the MEI Publications & Archive Collection. Most MEI publications are held in the Archive collection, and some do circulate while others are for library use only.
Conferences & Panel Discussions
These materials are located on the xxxx book case, xxx and xxx shelves. Items that have been cataloged are linked via the title, to the catalog record. There researchers will find circulation information. In general, c.1 is for library use only. Titles or items that do not provide a link to an item record are likely to not have been cataloged but will be as time permits. Items that have been scanned into the Rare Books Collection digital library, include a link stating that they are "Available online."

Annual Reports
Annual Reports cover the time period of 1969 through present day. Some years are missing. Maybe early Board Minutes books include Annual Reports...
There are also some bound and cataloged Annual Reports!
The following years are unaccounted for: pre-1969; 1984; 1986; 1988-1990; 2011; 2014-2017. It is possible that no Annual Report was created for some or all of those missing years.
Undated, print Annual Reports are noted with "ca." to indicate a circa date taken from handwritten years on the cover rather than printed dates. To save space, titles will only be written out here once in italics, when noting a change in the previous naming conventions.
Current reports dating back to 2005 are available on the MEI website, at the bottom of the About Us page and the Public Disclosures and Funding page.
Print Annual Reports cover the period from 1969 through 2008 (and 2018), and are listed here in chronological order. They may be found on the third bookcase, second shelf. To save space, the title has only been recorded once for all subsequent dates until the next title variation is noted.

Ledger
Covers the period of approximately May 8, 1946 to October 4, 1948. Table of Contents accurately relates sections of numerated pages which follow the initial alphabetical section.
Also includes two inserts: list of paid and unpaid memberships, and renewals, 1947 and 1948
Internal Documents: Board of Governors and Executive Committee--Papers and Minutes
Each volume in the Archive is recorded below. Listing of contents provide lists of some names and organizations found within the volumes, but are by no means exhaustive. Names and organizations are transcribed here as they appear in the documents.
All Minutes mention the MEJ and Library, so those departments are only listed under the topics when something exceptionally noteworthy is reported.
Board of Governors: Minutes (1946 - 1991)
27 bound volumes of MEI Board of Governors meeting minutes date from 1946 through 1991. Volumes are labeled as MEI Minutes, and shelved on ... of the third book case. While all volumes contain Board of Governors meeting minutes, the descriptions of contents specifically focus on topics that were discussed, names that were mentioned or present at the meetings, and other non-minutes documents included.
The volumes in the archive are listed below, while the contents themselves are described in a separate webpage in order to save space in this resource guide.
