About the Project
The Middle East Institute’s Afghanistan Watch project provides analysis and monitoring of Afghanistan's internal developments, regional security, and the country’s role in the global power context. The project aims to contribute to a comprehensive international focus on Afghanistan as domestic transitions increasingly affect regional and international power dynamics. We offer insightful analysis that helps advance the US and international policy and expert community’s understanding of the country and inform the policy conversation. Afghanistan Watch focuses internally on power struggles, insurgency, and the humanitarian and sociopolitical effects, and externally on the role of Afghanistan’s neighbors and regional power dynamics, as well as on the political and security implications for the United States and its allies.
