Dr. Carlo Bonura is a comparative political theorist in the Department of Politics and International Studies at SOAS, the University of London. His research examines contemporary Islamic political thought in Southeast Asia. He is currently completing a manuscript entitled Logics of Comparison: the Conceptualization of Islamic Liberalism and Comparative Political Thought that examines debates of Islamic liberalism in Malaysia and Indonesia. His research also focus on Thai politics and the ongoing conflict in southern Thailand.

On June 17, 2015 Malaysia’s opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, collapsed as a result of a growing ideological divide between two of the three main parties in the coalition, namely the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) and the Democratic Action Party (DAP).
