Charles Duelfer spent over 25 years in the national security agencies of the U.S. government. He served as deputy executive chairman of the UN Special Commission on Iraq from 1993 to 2000 and deputy head of the United Nations weapons inspections team from 2003 to January 23, 2005. He replaced David Kay on January 23, 2004 as the leader of the Iraq Survey Group, the group responsible for the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. His investigation uncovered several bribes in the Oil for Food program and numerous violations of proscribed weapons research and facilities, but no stockpiles of WMD.
Duelfer recently headed a small entrepreneurial space launch company. He is currently chairman of Omnis, Inc.

A possible path ahead is to take advantage of the post-election negotiations and configure a leadership that accommodates Sunni interests. This would by necessity mean someone other than Maliki becoming prime minister.
