Pietro Marzo is PhD candidate in Political Science at Laval University (Québec, Canada) and a Research Associate with the Centre interdisciplinaire de recherche sur l’Afrique et le Moyen-Orient (CIRAM). His research focuses on the international relations of Middle East and he is currently writing his dissertation on the international dimension of the Tunisian transition to democracy. His academic articles have appeared on the Journal of North African Studies and the Middle Eastern Studies.

As the barriers erected by Tunisia’s autocratic regime have crumbled, the range of programs delivered by international democracy promotion organizations has steadily increased. This essay examines the reasons for this growth and the distinctive manner in which foreign actors have involved themselves in Tunisia’s national politics since the 2011 revolution.
