Thomas Barfield is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Institute for the Study of Muslim Societies and Civilizations at Boston University. His books on Afghanistan include The Central Asian Arabs of Afghanistan (1981), Afghanistan: An Atlas of Indigenous Domestic Architecture (1991), and Afghanistan: Power and Politics 1500-2010 (in press).
